As one of the best restaurants in Amherst, NH, Bentley’s Roast Beef is proud to extend the holiday season to our customers throughout the year. How? Well, with our Thanksgiving Wrap, of course! But why is this ‘seasonal’ favorite such a crave-worthy item in the first place? Here, our team is delving into the history of the Thanksgiving Sandwich. Along with why this menu item is such a favorite – any time of the year.
Excellent question! According to Boston.com, the leftover Thanksgiving sandwich became an ubiquitous New England staple that took on a life of its own. As a repurposed Thanksgiving leftover meal, the roots trace to (believe it or not) Southeastern Massachusetts.
The best guess puts this sandwich first being crafted sometime around World War II when the first recipes can be found. After that, in 1954, a Fitchburg woman was cited for a prize-winning ‘turkey and dressing sandwich’ in the trade magazine Poultry Tribune.
It’s important to note that the big messy pile of delicious Thanksgiving dinner leftovers was not always once the case. In fact, during the 1930s and 1940s, this sandwich was rather dainty! Instead of a mile-high sandwich or overstuffed wrap, this menu offering took on the look of toast with gravy. Whatever leftovers were available were a mere welcomed addition.
Well, maybe not all of the best restaurants in Amherst. But, at Bentley’s Roast Beef, you can be sure that when your Thanksgiving wrap craving kicks in, we have you covered. 8 ounces of freshly roasted, carved to order white meat turkey complimented with real mayonnaise, cranberry sauce, and our homemade stuffing and gravy make this a meal that is sure to satisfy with every bite.
