Here at Bentley’s Roast Beef, we use only the freshest and finest ingredients in all of our meals, and homemade beverages.  Here is a little behind the scenes on one of our most popular refreshers.

The Twist

We’re all familiar with traditional lemonade.  So, what makes the Italian version different? The twist is in the syrup.  Italian lemonade features a delightful surprise of basil simple syrup incorporated with a blend of freshly squeezed lemons and seltzer, or sparkling water. Prepared to share with the entire family, or as an adult refresher at gatherings, this beverage is the perfect solution for any summer day.

Basil Simple Syrup

Although simple syrup is the sweetener of choice in many beverages, basil simple syrup brings a new twist to a common game.  With the following ingredients and a little time, you’ll be well on your way to making Italian lemonade.

  • Fresh bunch of basil, washed and stemmed.
  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 1 cup of water

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the basil, sugar, and water.  Simmer until the sugar has dissolved, about five minutes.  Once this is complete, remove the saucepan from the heat and allow it to cool.  Next, you’ll want to strain the liquid and throw away your basil.  Chill in the refrigerator for several hours.

Freshly Squeezed Lemonade

Now that your basil simple syrup has been prepared, it’s time to get squeezing! Although there are several variations to making fresh lemonade, we like to use 15 lemons to produce around 2 cups of freshly squeezed juice.  Once the juicing is complete, combine the lemon juice with the simple syrup and store in the refrigerator until you’re ready to use.

The Finale

Ready to try out that lemonade? Simply mix your lemon juice/simple syrup blend in a glass over ice with sparkling water.  This can be made to taste, depending on the sweetness you desire.  Remember to start light; you can always add more should you choose! This is also the time to incorporate your favorite vodka or gin if making an adult beverage. Finish your glass with a lemon twist, and you’re done!
